Every semester a two credit class, Comm 405: Community Service, is offered to any Cornell undergraduate. The class meets for two hours on Wednesday nights. To take the class for credit, you do not have to be a competitor on the forensics team, but you must be an effective speaker. Students are given an invaluable opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with public speaking. We firmly believe that oral communication skills are a prerequisite to personal and professional success. Additionally, there is a significant need for young individuals to build self-confidence and the ability to 'say something'. This type of community service is highly regarded because Cornell students and the youth experience interactive learning. Both gain a greater understanding of the principles of effective communication as well as appreciation and respect for each other. CFS currently coordinates two programs to serve the youth in the area: one with the Tompkins County chapter of 4H and the other with Ithaca high school. The Cornell Forensics Society and the Cornell Cooperative Extension have partnered to build a stronger countywide and statewide 4H public speaking program. Our students work directly with local school age children to help them write and deliver speeches, as well as prepare for debates. The program is designed and implemented by Cornell students who play an active role in creating new and innovative ways to work with the young 4H participants. The Ithaca high school program is a response to requests from speech organizations who need assistance to prepare for debate, model United Nations, and mock trial tournaments. Cornell students offer their expertise with argumentation and research to help Ithaca high school students perform at a higher level. |
