Our speech team participants choose several events to prepare for competition at tournaments. Unlike some schools which allow students to specialize in one type of event, CFS encourages team members to experiment. There are three categories of individual events: Platform speeches, Limited Preparation, and Dramatic Interpretation. Platform speeches include ten minute presentations to persuade, inform, or entertain. These events emphasize public communication skills and therefore require appropriate topic selection, significant research, careful speech writing, professional visual aids, and smooth delivery without notes. The top speeches are unique, thorough, and interesting. The Limited Prep events, impromptu and extemporaneous, involve spontaneous creation of an analytical speech with little time. Impromptu speaking gives students a chance to organize thoughts quickly when presented with a quote or a statement. Students interpret the meaning and then offer reasons why they agree or disagree. Extemp demands a high level of familiarity with a wide range of current political, economic, and social issues. Competitors must research and collect foreign and domestic news articles so that they are able to support their analysis. After choosing one of three possible questions, students have thirty minutes to organize and memorize a seven minute speech which clearly answers the question. Dramatic Interpretation is quite different because the focus is on a passionate performance more than effective public speaking. The Interp events include poetry, prose, and duo (which is just two people working together). To prepare an event for competition you will have to find a current poem(s), short story(s), or play(s) that you like and an audience will appreciate. Then you have to cut and paste the piece so that you have a polished ten minute performance that follows a single theme and flows well. You will be expected to practice frequently until you have worked out all the kinks and you are able to make an audience feel the emotions that you touch upon. |
